Abstract

Neonatal sepsis is a clinical syndrome characterized by systemic infection occurring in the first 28 days of neonatal life. One of the risk factors that cause neonatal sepsis in newborns includes factors from the neonate such as neonatal asphyxia, bblr, and prematurity. The research objective was to determine the relationship between neonatal asphyxia and neonatal sepsis at Abdul Wahab Sjahranie Hospital, Samarinda. This study used a retrospective analytical method with a case control approach. Sampling used patient medical record data during January 2018 - December 2019 at the medical record installation using non random purposive sampling technique. The number of samples was 70 infants consisting of 35 infants in the case group and 35 infants in the control group. The results showed that babies in the case group, as many as 20 babies (57.1%) had asphyxia and 26 babies (74.3%) had a birth weight. Meanwhile, in the control group, it was found that 11 babies (31.4%) had asphyxia and 17 babies (48.6%) had a birth weight. Bivariate analysis using the chi square test showed that the bblr value obtained p = 0.049, so it can be concluded that there is a relationship between bblr and the incidence of neonatal sepsis. However, the results of the chi square test on neonatal asphyxia showed no relationship between neonatal asphyxia and neonatal sepsis with p value = 0.054.
