Abstract

Cyberchondria is an excessive information search on the internet which causes distress. One of the factors thought to be exacerbating cyberchondria is anxiety. This research aims to investigate the correlation between anxiety and cyberchondria in Samarinda. The research design used in this research was cross-sectional method. 192 samples were selected by using purposive sampling method. The data were gathered online using self-administered questionnaires, i.e., Cyberchondria Severity Scale (CSS) and Short Health Anxiety Inventory (SHAI). Bivariate analysis was performed on the data using chi-square test. The result showed that 54.7% of the samples had cyberchondria and 83.3% of the samples did not have anxiety. By using SPSS (a statistic app) to do the statistical calculation, this research found that there was a positive correlation between anxiety and cyberchondria (p = 0.00). Thus, it can be concluded that anxiety may have a role as a predictor in the occurrence of cyberchondria.
