Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) is a disease caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium tuberculosis and can be transmitted directly through droplet. Most of these bacteria usually attack the lungs and the other body organs. There are some factors causing tuberculosis in children including age, gender, history of BCG vaccination and nutritional status. This study aims to investigate the characteristics of pediatric patients with tuberculosis. The research variables included types of tuberculosis, age, sex, history of BCG vaccination, and nutritional status among pediatric patients with tuberculosis. This was an observational descriptive study applying cross-sectional approach. Using total sampling technique, inpatient medical records at Abdul Wahab Sjahranie General Hospital in Samarinda from January 2020 to December 2021 were used as the data. Of 30 tuberculosis cases in children, 8 cases (26.7%) were mostly found as tuberculosis lymphadenitis. Children aged ranging from 12-18 (30%) mostly suffered from tuberculosis. Around 21 (70%) of tuberculosis patients were female pediatric patients. In addition, the findings also revealed that tuberculosis cases were found in children with the history of BCG vaccination (22 cases or 77.3%) and children with normal nutritional status (15 cases or 50%).
